Sensorimotor Psychotherapy in Toronto

WHAT IS SENSORIMOTOR PSYCHOTHERAPY?

Our present-day and past experiences impact not only our thoughts and emotions but our brains and bodies. The field the psychology is seeing an increase in therapy approaches, such as sensorimotor psychotherapy, that integrate mind and body. Research helps us better understand the psychology and biology of bodily-based emotional states and the need for integration of the mind and body in order to heal and achieve transformation.

Unprocessed somatic responses are shown to contribute to many symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, feeling stuck, self-esteem and trauma. These symptoms affect the body, specifically the nervous system. Therefore Sensorimotor Psychotherapy uses the body as a primary entry point in processing these symptoms.

If you are struggling with symptoms of anxiety, depression, trauma, self-esteem or feeling stuck, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy is an effective approach to address and involve your body in the healing process directly.

In a session informed by sensorimotor psychotherapy, you will talk about what’s coming up for you, as you would with any form of talk therapy. I will gently help you increase your awareness of your emotions, bodily sensations, and behaviours. Some of the ways in which I may do this is by bringing your focused attention to your body as you share your story, such as your physical sensations that accompany your feelings, any movements as well as by providing you with somatic exercises.

Once your nervous system has calmed, emotional and cognitive processing takes place with more ease and insight. This process will enable us to reprocess traumatic events in a safe and contained setting. I will also help you develop tools to help manage and cope with situations that trigger you.

THE SENSORIMOTOR PSYCHOTHERAPY RELATIONSHIP

I create a safe place for you to start your exploration journey. My relationship with you is central to our work. I believe that the client-therapist relationship plays a fundamental role in the therapeutic process and successful outcome.

To get the most out of counselling, it’s helpful for you to maintain momentum in your sessions. With regularly set sessions, we can usually make progress faster than when our sessions are spread apart. In my experience, weekly sessions are most productive. Some people feel that bi-weekly works for them. I honor and meet my clients where they are at.
