Working Together in Therapy

I’m Victoria Donahue, a Registered Psychotherapist in Toronto specializing in trauma, anxiety, and nervous system healing. I work with adults who feel stuck in repeating patterns such as overthinking, burnout, self-criticism, emotional overwhelm, or difficulty in relationships, even after trying to figure it out on their own.

I provide in-person and virtual psychotherapy for adults in Toronto and across Ontario.

Many of my clients are high-functioning and capable, yet internally exhausted. They may understand their struggles intellectually but still feel caught in the same emotional reactions, fears, or behaviours. Therapy helps us access the deeper processes driving those patterns so change can actually occur. Not just insight.

Who I Work With

I work with adults experiencing anxiety, trauma, chronic stress, burnout, perfectionism, and relationship patterns that feel hard to change. Many clients begin therapy because anxiety is interfering with daily life, relationships, or sleep. You can learn more about my approach on the anxiety therapy page.

You might notice:

  • Chronic worry, overthinking, or anxiety that doesn’t shut off
  • Burnout, perfectionism, or pressure to hold everything together
  • Difficulty setting boundaries or feeling responsible for others
  • Repeating relationship patterns you can’t seem to change
  • A harsh inner critic or persistent self-doubt
  • Feeling disconnected from yourself, numb, or shut down
  • Knowing what you should do but feeling unable to do it
  • Old experiences still shaping current reactions

I work with you to get to the root causes of your symptoms so you can heal. I help you establish a connection with your deepest desires, needs, values, emotions, strengths, likes and dislikes. By developing self-awareness, a sense of harmony and belonging in the world is fostered. Stress, worry, fatigue, fears and self-doubt are signals asking for attention. Life events, relationship patterns, dreams and body sensations can bring forward what is outside awareness. This supports growth and a stronger sense of self.

The truth is that each person is naturally creative, resourceful and whole, yet we often need a collaborative space to explore fears, needs and emotions safely and with guidance.

Together we work on closing the gap between where you are and where you want to be, developing deeper understanding, emotional clarity, and more freedom in how you live your life.

Through therapy, clients often begin to:

  • Feel balanced emotionally, physically, mentally, and psychologically
  • Feel more energized and alive and experience more joy
  • Feel courageous and empowered to live life on your terms
  • Live with more ease and clarity
  • Develop more supportive and secure relationships
  • Trust your intuition more and feel less driven by external pressure
  • Feel less stuck in mental loops and more grounded emotionally. Move out of your head and into your heart.

My Approach

My psychotherapy approach is experiential and integrative. Rather than only talking about problems, we work directly with the nervous system and emotional memory networks where patterns are stored.

Depending on your needs, sessions may incorporate EMDR therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), somatic therapy, and attachment-focused psychotherapy. These approaches help the brain and body process unresolved experiences so symptoms naturally shift. The goal is not just coping, but lasting change in how you experience yourself and your relationships.

How Sessions Work

A session is 50 minutes in duration. Sessions are collaborative and paced according to your nervous system so therapy does not feel overwhelming. We clarify your goals and establish a therapeutic focus, bringing concerns into focus in a supportive and non-judgmental way.

I also offer 80-minute sessions. The extended time can be helpful for deeper processing work such as EMDR when appropriate.

What Therapy Is Like

Therapy is an active process. Some sessions focus on understanding patterns, while others involve working directly with emotions, memories, or body sensations. We move at a pace that feels manageable so the work is meaningful but not overwhelming.

The pace and depth of therapy are adjusted to match your capacity so the process feels steady and sustainable.

Some people come for short-term support around a specific issue, while others choose longer-term therapy to work through deeper patterns. We regularly check in about progress and adjust the work as needed.

Therapy May Not Be The Best Fit If:

  • You are looking only for advice or quick solutions
  • You are not open to self-reflection
  • You prefer a directive approach where someone tells you what to do
  • You are not ready to engage in an ongoing process

If you’re unsure where to start, we can figure that out together during your consultation.
